Keynote Address – How the Energy Transition is Making China Great Again

Discover how the energy transition is driving China’s economic growth amid export challenges. Leading the world in EV rollout and battery technology development, China this year will surpass its 2030 targets for renewables installation and EV penetration. As China enters the last year of its 14th five-year plan, all eyes are on its leadership’s next moves. Will they double down to 2030 to keep the green economy alive?

Ian is a highly regarded industry analyst, with over 20 years of experience in metals, starting at CRU in London. Since 2003 Ian was based in Shanghai, China initially with Steel Business Briefing and then Macquarie, before a five year stint at Rio Tinto running their iron ore analysis. Since 2010 Ian worked as a sell-side analyst with CLSA, Macquarie and others based in Shanghai and Singapore. Since 2022 Ian has been based in Tokyo with Astris Advisory and continues to bring his leading-edge thoughts on the markets as an unbiased independent analyst.

Moderator

Damian is a senior mining investment and financing executive with over 25 years of experience in mining mergers, acquisitions, divestments and financing.

Until recently Damian was an Investment Director at EMR Capital. He was closely involved with EMR’s significant investments, including the Kestrel coking coal mine in Australia and the Martabe gold mine in Indonesia.

He is currently an adviser to several Boards and Vice Chairman of the Asia Mining Club.

Prior to joining EMR Capital, Damian co-led Australian mining coverage for Deutsche Bank where he led numerous cross-border M&A and financing transactions for companies including Fortescue, Glencore, Baosteel, EMR Capital, St Barbara, Kidman Resources (acquired by Wesfarmers) and Galaxy Resources (which became Arcadium and was recently acquired by Rio Tinto).

Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Damian worked for BNP Paribas in a similar capacity and commenced his career with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK.

Damian has extensive strategic advisory and end to end M&A experience. His financing experience includes work across the capital structure and in multiple markets. He has experience with many commodities including coal, iron ore, gold, base metals, uranium and battery materials.

Damian graduated with a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Birmingham, UK and is a Chartered Accountant.

Ling Lu is a Managing Director at Standard Chartered Bank Hong Kong looking after the Metals and Mining business for Greater China.
Stacey Golokin is an accomplished finance professional with extensive expertise in investor relations, financial strategy, and corporate communications within the mining and resource sectors. She currently serves as the Director of Investor Relations (Asia Pacific) at NexGen Energy Ltd., where she leads strategic engagement initiatives, fostering strong relationships with investors, analysts, and stakeholders across the region.

Stacey holds a Master’s degree in Finance and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, complemented by diplomas in Mining Finance, Investor Relations, Stockbroking, and Financial Planning.

Shaun is a seasoned capital markets strategist with over 15 years of experience as an entrepreneur, investor, fund manager, and advisor. His expertise spans financial services across Australia, the United States, and Asia.

As the Founder, Managing Director, and Chief Investment Officer of Viriathus Capital Pty Ltd (holder of Australian Financial Services License 297950), Shaun leads its Structured Investment and Funds Management division, ANADARA. In this capacity, he plays a critical role in investment strategy, risk management, and regulatory oversight. He is a Responsible Officer and an active member of both the Investment and Compliance Committees. Under his leadership, the firm has launched three managed investment schemes and developed a range of innovative structured investment products.

Shaun has been deeply involved in the energy transition for over a decade, working as a principal investor and advisor to companies at the forefront of the sector. He has also published multiple papers exploring value-driven opportunities in the energy transition. His vision for the Anadara Battery Transition Fund is to invest in cutting-edge technologies that enhance existing battery solutions and pioneer new innovations, contributing to a cleaner, more sustainable future.

Rob is Managing Director of Starboard Global, a venture capital fund and project incubator based in Hong Kong. Starboard provides capital, project management and equity capital markets advisory for mineral exploration and development projects. Starboard has listed six mineral exploration companies over the past eight years in Australia, London and Sweden.

Rob has 25 years’ experience in corporate strategy, mining M&A and exploration management. A former management consultant, he spent five years in corporate strategy for Xstrata, prior to the Glencore merger. Before Starboard, he was Managing Director of two ASX listed exploration companies.

He currently sits on the Boards of three publicly listed juniors: Pivotal Metals, Nordic Resources and Emmerson PLC. He holds an honours degree in chemical engineering and a PhD in mineral engineering from the University of California, Berkeley.

With over 15 years of experience across technology research, the automotive industry, energy, and finance, Frederik has helped steer investments into climate tech globally.
